How to Write a Compelling Unique Selling Proposition (USP)

How to Write a Compelling Unique Selling Proposition (USP)

As a copywriter, I’m often tasked to come up with a simple statement that summarise for easy understanding what the company/product /service does for who and the benefits derived.

Well, I say “simple”, but writing a strong USP is anything but simple. Usually the shorter a piece of communication, the harder it is to write and get right.

This statement is what’s known in marketing terms as a unique selling proposition, or USP. It’s a statement that defines what sets your company/product apart from others in the market and why customers should choose it over others. A compelling USP can be a game-changer for your business, helping to attract new customers, retain existing ones and increase sales.

In this article, we'll explore how to write a compelling USP that effectively communicates the value of your company/product.

You should have one USP for your company brand that covers the overall value your company provides and a USP for each of your products and services. Let’s look at writing USPs for products, and you can adapt the same to write one for your brand.

Identify the core problem your product solves

The first step in writing a compelling USP is to identify the core problem that your product solves. Ask yourself, "What is the biggest pain point or challenge that my target audience is facing?" This is the problem that you should focus on in your USP, as it will be the foundation of your value proposition.

Explain the benefits of your solution

Once you have identified the core problem, you need to explain the benefits of your solution. What are the tangible results that your customers can expect to see as a result of using your product? Think about the end-goals of your target audience, and how your product can help them achieve these goals.

Highlight your solution mechanism and approach

It's important to not only explain the benefits of your solution, but also how it delivers these results. What is the mechanism behind your solution, and how does it work? Explain the approach that you've taken to address the problem and why it's unique compared to other solutions in the market.

Differentiate yourself from the competition

Following on from the above, you need to explain why someone would purchase your product over another. What makes your solution different and better than others in the market? Highlight the unique features, benefits, or value that your product provides that others do not.

Once you've considered these four points, you're ready to write your USP statement. A USP statement typically follows this format:

"(Product) helps (adj who) with (problem) to achieve (benefits) through (solution)"

Let’s look at a few examples form different industries

"Our state-of-the-art lawnmower helps busy homeowners quickly and easily maintain a beautiful garden with minimal effort through its ergonomic design and durable materials."

"Our all-natural skincare line helps environmentally conscious consumers achieve clear, radiant skin through our use of organic and locally sourced ingredients."

"Our smart home security system offers peace of mind to busy homeowners with its cutting-edge technology and 24/7 CCTV, allowing them to easily monitor and secure their homes from anywhere at any time."

"Our luxury hotel offers discerning travellers an unforgettable, personalised experience with world-class amenities, exceptional service and customised, concierge-style attention, allowing them to truly relax, rejuvenate and feel pampered during their stay."
