9 compelling reasons you should hire a copywriter to write a website
There are 9 compelling reasons you should hire a copywriter to write a website for you rather than do it yourself.
Let's get right down to them:
On the scheme of things, writing your own website is probably not the best use of your time. A professional copywriter can do it better and faster and can bring added value to the project with insights that you may not have considered.
This is a hard one. It's especially true for small businesses and one-man shows. While a marketing manager in a large organisation can detach from the process, the small business owner often can't. They are too emotionally invested in the business to be able to see the wood for the trees.
There's also the issue of not wanting to "boast" about how great you are. But if you don't, your campaigns aren't going to be very compelling. After all, if you don't believe in your product, why should your customer?
Hiring a copywriter to write your website for you will allow for that added sales copy that needs to be there for the things you don't feel you can possibly say. You'll see better conversion in the end.
When you write your website, you are writing to real people who visit your site. These are people with families, a career, particular interests and hobbies, a sense of humour - you know, real people.
So you need to write the copy on your website as if you were speaking to those real people. The rule of thumb? If you wouldn't say it, don't write it.
If you have trouble writing conversationally because you've been trained your whole life to write formally, hire a copywriter to write your website for you.
4. You've never written a website before
It seems like an innocent, short, easy project and then it turns into a monster! If you don't have the experience of writing copy for a website, experimenting with your own is probably not the wisest idea.
You'll save a lot of time in the long run if you simply outsource the project to a copywriter. And time when your website or funnel is not up has an opportunity cost to it. No website or funnel, no money coming into your business.
Tone of voice is another aspect of writing copy that is important to get right. You aren't there in person to explain your business to the reader and choice of words and tone can change your intended meaning to something else entirely. Get it wrong and, at best, you get laughed at and forgiven, at worst you lose potential sales.
6. You don't know how to SEO your writing
You need your website to show up in search engines when people search for common keywords around your products or services. Hey, if you aren't even showing up for your company name, you have a problem.
Google is getting really good with their AI technology at understanding written content on websites and it doesn't take much to get your site showing up. But there are still things a web developer and copywriter can do to fast-track the process. Your site should be built in a way that is optimised for search engines to start with. On top of that, your copywriter can help to optimise the content of each page. And don't forget to request Google to crawl your site again when you are done.
The last thing you want to do is invest thousands on a swanky new website and have the content in it do nothing for you! I talk a lot about the message being way more important than the design.
Set aside a good budget for your website content. It really IS the most important thing on your website. After all, a pretty website without any words isn't going to do anything for you.
Now imagine a website with really compelling copy ... Don't skimp on the most valuable thing on your website - the message.
If your competitor isn't doing it better but is SAYING it better, who's going to get the business? You owe it, as a duty of care, to your customers to be able to communicate the value of your products and services so that they can make the right decision.
Hire a copywriter who can analyse the competition and is able to position you apart from them.
I've seen a lot of sites with no call to action at all except for the contact page. You have no control how a customer will navigate through your site, which pages they will land on and which pages they will miss entirely. You need calls to action on every page, all aimed at getting the customer to take that next step.
If you aren't sure how to write compelling calls to action and don't know the latest research on what makes people click through, hire a copywriter that does.
